I get it, seeing other players adventuring out on your server and coming across them randomly is cool, especially when you can chip in and help them, yet moments like this aren’t essential to the core Diablo experience. Question is: do the benefits you get from Diablo 4 being an always-online game outweigh what you wouldn’t get in an offline mode? To me, not really. And while I’m sure that the ultimate plan is for Activision Blizzard to provide updates and hot fixes in the game without forcing players to sit it out until it’s back online, for now it grates that a game people have paid £69.99 / $69.99 / AU$109.95 for (if the standard edition was purchased digitally) isn’t able to be enjoyed 100% of the time. The truth is that Diablo 4 will never not be a game in need of maintenance.
It’s good that disconnects are being actively looked into, but it would be less of an issue if players weren’t reliant on servers to play and instead had a dedicated offline mode. We most recently saw this occur at the beginning of this week, when Activision Blizzard had to take the game offline to try and fix ongoing disconnects prior to the Diablo 4 update 1.0.3 patch arriving later. There are some perks in that this version of Sanctuary feels more alive than it ever has, but there are several drawbacks too, which players are quickly discovering.įor one thing, Diablo 4 being online only means that whenever maintenance is required, downtime is almost certainly arriving alongside. It’s a little bit different this time, though, because unlike previous entries Diablo 4 is an always-online live-service game, which means players – for the first time ever – have to maintain an internet connection to be able to play – even solo outside of a party. Diablo 4 has been a rollicking success in the weeks since it launch, but always requiring an internet connection is still causing more hassle than it should.Īfter 10 years away, one poorly conceived mobile spin-off and a remaster of arguably one of the best games in the series, Diablo proper is finally well and truly back.
